Included — minimum-wage earners who live alone must rent. The deficit shown in most cities is a deliberate and accurate finding.
Public transit; no car affordable at this income.
Dining 1×/month, 1 streaming service, no gym, no private health, no loans. This profile will show a deficit in Sofia and most large cities — that is accurate and intentional.
1,700 BGN net — skilled worker in manufacturing, construction or trade. NSI Q4 2025 shows the processing-industry average at roughly 2,000–2,200 BGN gross (≈ 1,550–1,707 BGN net). 1,700 BGN net represents a somewhat more experienced blue-collar worker or a trade/construction operative who earns a modest premium above the manufacturing floor.

900 BGN net — the average Bulgarian pension is ~870–920 BGN (NSSI 2026). This profile represents the median pensioner in rural Bulgaria.
NOT included — the defining characteristic of this profile is home ownership. Rural Bulgarian retirees overwhelmingly own their homes.
Car (old, paid off, 0 financing). Essential in rural areas with no public transit. Fuel costs modelled at city average × 60 L/month.
CRITICAL DEFINITION: This profile intentionally shows the rural-subsistence scenario. No dining out (home cooking), no streaming, no international trips, no gym, no private health (models pensioners who rely entirely on public healthcare). If the calculator shows a surplus, that reflects the low-cash-outlay rural lifestyle — not affluence. The absence of streaming/internet cost does NOT mean the person cannot afford internet; it means those costs are often subsidised by family or not applicable.
4,200 BGN net — a conservative estimate. Successful Bulgarian freelancers often earn 5,000–10,000+ BGN but with income volatility. This figure represents a typical stable month, NOT peak earnings.

No car, no loans. Freelancers in Bulgaria typically pay social and health contributions on the minimum insurance base unless they opt higher — the salary field here reflects net post-contribution income, which freelancers must calculate separately.
7,000 BGN net combined — top-earning couple (e.g., two senior professionals). This profile reflects genuine affluence, NOT a typical Bulgarian household. It deliberately shows a surplus to illustrate that high incomes are viable in Bulgaria.
Included — models a premium 1BR or 2BR apartment in city centre. The calculator uses the city's average 1BR rent (couple tier = same as 1BR avg); premium-centre rent can be 30–50% higher.
Car (600 BGN financing for a mid-range new car) + no public transit.
IMPORTANT DEFINITION: 'Луксозен' means a well-funded couple in a major city — NOT extravagant wealth. It models upper-middle-class Bulgarian life, not international luxury. Dining 12×/month, gym, private health, 3 international trips, 4 streaming. No consumer debt beyond car financing.
